One of the weirdest things I discovered about working on the internet is the two step thing called Internet Time.  Internet Time runs at two speeds.  The difference between those two speeds is what creates the frenzied need for patience.

The First speed is the instant on, always there, updated 3 seconds ago web, the web where everything you put out there is seen and heard immediately.  No wait time, the internet goes as fast as you can hit the enter key.   That is what gets you instant headline news, updated blog feeds, and all sorts of other stuff.  As soon as I push publish on this post, it will be live and anyone coming to the site will see it.

The second speed is the dog slow discovery speed of the net.  There are so many people pushing enter, clicking publish, adding new sites and pages, and generally tossing new information, that the systems in place to find that new information are incredibly slow.  As an example, I recently redid a site I own called You Got Porn.  Now, the time between the point that I update the site and the major search engines like Google and Yahoo will discover the changes and do something about it can be up to 6 months.

So when you are working on something new, you have to hurry up and get it done, and then wait endlessly for the fruits of your labors to be borne.  Internet time.  Hurry up and wait!
